Horsford’s Sugar
Maple Lives On
at Versailles
April
2002 Volume 15, No. 1
Charlie Proutt and Eileen Schilling,
owners of Horsford Gardens &
Nursery, presented to France a sugar
maple given to the Chateau Versailles by
Governor Howard Dean and the State
of Vermont. The maple was planted in
an “American Grove,” donated in a gesture
of goodwill by over 30 states following
France’s devastating hurricane of
December, 1999. Vermont was the only
state to send nursery “ambassadors” to
deliver the tree. Horsford’s maple, we’re
proud to report, was the largest of all of
the trees shipped overseas from the
United States.
