Join Us April 26 for Arbor Day
April
2002 Volume 15, No. 1
The first Arbor Day
took place in
Nebraska on April 10,
1872. A member of
Nebraska’s State
Board of
Agriculture, Julius
Sterling Morton,
proposed that a
special day be set
aside dedicated
to tree planting
and increasing
awareness of the importance
of trees. The first Arbor
Day was an amazing
success, with more than one
million trees planted. Today all 50 states
celebrate Arbor Day.
As tree growers, we at Horsford’s
take Arbor Day to heart and out into
the community. Once again we invite
the entire community to join us on
April 26, this year’s Arbor Day, as we
plant two trees on the grounds of
Charlotte Central School. This will be
our 12th year planting trees at CCS on
Arbor Day. You will notice that many of
the trees planted over the years have
thrived and are now large enough to
actually provide some shade. At the
Arbor Day celebration we’ll also take
the opportunity to perform basic maintenance
by pruning and mulching the
established trees.
We encourage the people of Vermont
to honor Arbor Day in two ways. First
we are giving away free seedling trees to
our first 200 customers — one per
household — on Arbor Day weekend.
Second, all shade trees will be 30% off
our regular retail price. Horsford’s
gardeners will gladly take the time to
help you choose the best maple,
oak, birch, shadblow, or other tree
for your yard.
Arbor Day is an opportunity
for all citizens to help shape the
future of America’s landscape.
During this time of escalating
development it is important to replant
our urban and suburban landscapes.
Keeping the Green
Mountain State green is everyone’s
responsibility.
