Horsford’s Stone Yard
Spring 2003
- Vol. 16 No.1
Bluestone is a sandstone from the New York/Pennsylvania region that splits easily and therefore is readily available at affordable and competitive pricing. We carry pavers in rectangular shapes as well as massive slabs in the natural shapes they had when mined from the earth. Treads are longer and thicker pieces that can be used to make stairs. Our quarry also “tumbles” some of their stone, giving it a water-worn look that can feel like it came from a streambed. They actually load the stone into cement mixing trucks and let it tumble for hours until the edges wear smooth.
Granite is another local stone that can be used for walks and patios as well as to build risers and stairs. We generally have granite in 12” x 12” paver sizes as well as large slabs 6 inches thick for making stairways. We work closely with several quarries and can get stone in custom sizes as well. Come see some of the benches we’ve built in consult with the granite quarries.
Granite Cobbles are hand tooled to appear old and rustic. Although we have built patios, walks, even driveways out of cobbles, they are generally lined up to form edges of planting beds and paving areas.
Fieldstone is used for stone wall building, and ours comes from southern Vermont and western New York. |
