Heptacodium to Metasequoia

Heptacodium miconioides
Seven Son Flower
ZONE 4, HT 15', SP 20', SUN
This genus of plant was discovered on an expedition in China in 1980! A fast-growing, large multi-stemmed shrub with attractive exfoliating bark that provides three seasons of interest. September blooms of small, fragrant white flowers that, as they fade, are replaced by wine red calyces which remain colorful until late fall.

Hydrangea paniculata 'Grandiflora'- Treeform
Treeform Hydrangea

ZONE 4, HT 8-10', SP 10', SUN/SHADE
This small tree is a pruned form of 'Pee Gee' hydrangea. Huge, cone-shaped, white flowers bloom midsummer turning to pink and then bronze in the fall. Use in combination with other small trees to keep flowering interest throughout the season. Use dried flowers in arrangements and wreaths.

Hydrangea paniculata ‘Snow Mountain’ - Treeform
Treeform Hydrangea

ZONE 4, HT 8-10’, SP 10’, SUN/PART SUN
'Snow Mountain' is an improved variety of the 'Kyushu'. The blooms are even larger and more dense than the older 'Kyushu' variety. It still has the early July flowers that persist through September and can take the heat of summer better than other Tree Hydrangeas.

A late panicle hydrangea trained to a single stem. Blooms in late August with showy white flowers that age to a mauve pink. A more open, elegant flower head than ‘PeeGee’.

Larix laricina
Tamarack

ZONE 3, HT40-80', SP 15-30', SUN
This native deciduous conifer is one of my favorite trees.  This tree is one of the only natives that can grow in bogs but the soil requirements are not limited to standing water. Use in the front yard or around the pond. The soft needles emerge in green clusters but in the fall turn a splendid golden yellow before they defoliate.

Perhaps the hardiest of magnolias. I have always admired a mature plant that sits a the end of a dairy barn not far from the Round Church in Richmond. It always puts on a magnificent show when it blooms in Spring. Loaded with white flowers in Spring.
