ZONE 3, HT 24-30", SUN/PT SHADE           We Chose to grow this variety due to its outstanding performance and distinctive blooms. The luminescent, light rose-pink flowers grow one inside the other. Flowers appear in spring over light, blue-green foliage. Plant in well drained soil. May experience a period of summer dormancy. Looks great when allowed to naturalize in a woodland garden.

Very dramatic and a must for the early summer garden. Double dark purple blooms resemble tiny Dahlias in May and June. Blooms for atleast 4 weeks! Will attract butterflies and hummingbirds but not the deer or rabbits! Also makes a nice cut flower.

A unique native wildflower, known and loved by everyone. The unusual 4-7 inch, green and purple flower is tubular with a blade bent over the opening and appears in early to mid spring. Red berries appear 5-6 months after flowering. Plant in shady, moist areas.

A long blooming sea thrift with dark rose-red, ball-shaped flowers from mid spring to early summer. The tight mounds of grass-like foliage are evergreen and drought tolerant. Also tolerates high salt levels.

ZONE 3, HT 8", SUN This mound forming perennial is well suited for the rock garden or a perennial bed with very well drained soil. Mounding foliage is needle like, green, and glossy. Flowers are held above foliage on short stems. They appear as little pink pom-poms in spring.

ZONE 3-7, HT 8", PART SUN/SHADE         This dwarf variety has the same creamy white flowers as the other goat's beards but on a compact plant. Use in the shade garden to add late summer color and a texture contrast to your hosta. Over time this plant forms an attractive mound that you want to stop and pet!

This plant can be found growing deep in the nursery woods. The leaves are dark green and the tall plumes are creamy white in early to mid summer. It looks like a giant astilbe! Prefers moist soil. This plant is a great solution for an east-facing foundation planting: it provides height for three seasons but dies to the ground for winter, thus not damaged by falling snow and ice.

A ground hugging perennial with glossy heart-shaped foliage. Wild ginger prefers rich soil and ample moisture. Excellent in woodland gardens and a very effective ground cover. In spring, look under the leaves for the unusual purple-brown, nut-like flowers. They lay on the ground so beetles will pollinate them.

ZONE 4-8, HT 8", PART SUN/SHADE         This wonderful groundcover has dark green, shiny, heart shaped leaves. Given rich, organic soil, sufficient moisture and shade it will spread by rhizomes to form a beautiful carpet. Flowers are inconspicuous, but unusual.

This Vermont native belongs to the same genus as the ever popular Butterfly Weed. This native species is more adaptable to a variety of soil conditions and provides both an aesthetic and utilitarian purpose. Dusty pink flowers appear in summer.

A midseason flowering perennial that does great in wet soil. Full sun is best for strong stems and abundant flowers but some shade is tolerated. Looks great when planted among garden Phlox, Liatris, and Echinacea.

Bright orange flowers bloom against dark green foliage all summer. A must for the sunny border and the butterflies. Prefers well drained soils and is drought tolerant. Use as a cut flower.


Aster divaricatus

A fabulous native plant to add to your woodland garden! Fragrant, white flowers with yellow to pink centers are abundant along black wiry stems from August through September. The dark green leaves are heart shaped and coarsely toothed and not susceptible to mildew. Butterflies love the flowers and deer shouldn't bother them.

When planted in a sunny location where they can receive plenty of water, New England asters are easy to grow. 'Purple Dome' has masses of purple daisies from late summer well into fall. A classic combination with Sedum 'Autumn Joy' and your favorite goldenrod.
