The strong spires on this New Zealand hybrid do not need staking while they support the dramatic, very dark purple flowers with white or brown bees. They are often double-flowered and about 10% of them may bloom white or pale mauve. The blooms appear in early summer and, if deadheaded and fertilized, may rebloom in late summer or early fall.

Performs best in rich well drained soil with a basic pH. This variety is more heat tolerant than others. Although it is short-lived, losing vigor after 2-3 years, it will be a great addition to your perennial beds!

A very handsome wild fern. The delicate fronds are slightly hairy. Withstands a wide variety of conditions, but prefers humusy, acid soil -- either wet or dry.

Delicate inflorescences with hair-like texture held above neat clumps of dark green foliage. Particularly beautiful in sweeps and mass plantings. An alternative to, or companion for, hostas. Prefers moist soils.

Specimen plant with white, pink, or rose-violet showy flowers in late spring or early summer. Glossy, leathery leaves are attractive all summer and give off a citrus-scented, volatile oil that, if conditions are right, can be lit with a match in mid-summer! This same oil causes photodermatitis in some people. Dictamnus doesn't like to be moved, so choose its location carefully.

This hardy, perennial foxglove bears flowers the color of crushed strawberries in late June through July. Plant it in the back and give it some shade. Mulch in winter in Vermont.

Tall spires of lavender flowers with purple "foxprints" inside. A reseeding biennial that may be more perennial if you cut off the flower stalks to prevent seeding -- it will also promote rebloom later in the summer. Prefers fertile, moist, acidic soils in part shade.

Digitalis purpurea 'Camelot Rose'

Add height to your part sun garden with these tall spires of rose-colored flowers that have purple spots inside each tubular blossom. A reseeding biennial, if you let it. To encourage it to be perennial, cut off the flower spikes before they go to seed, which will also encourage them to rebloom. Prefers fertile, moist, acidic soil.

Short spikes of raspberry pink flowers rise above neat mounds of velvety, evergreen foliage. This foxglove is not particular about soil location -- just don't over water. It blooms from early to mid summer and the rabbits are not supposed to enjoy it as a snack.

Attractive lance-shaped leaves, and in early spring will produce up to 3 drooping soft yellow flowers per stem followed by small, black berries in the fall. Korean woodland perennial.

This eastern American native holds its sweet, cyclamen-like flowers well above the clump of dark green foliage. The flowers bloom in late spring in shades of white, pink and red. It prefers soil similar to where it grows in the wild: well-drained but consistently moist, humus-enriched. Goes dormant in summer.

Doronicum orientale 'Little Leo'

Like our own little Leo, this plant has a sunny disposition in the early spring and arrives just as the winter wanes. The yellow flowers have a double row of petals around the yellow center and are held above the lush green foliage.

A sun-loving groundcover with soft, green creeping foliage and tiny yellow flower clusters in early spring. Lovely with tulips and grape hyacinths. I've seen them rebloom lightly in late summer. An alpine plant.
