Horsford Gardens and Nursery is located in Charlotte, Vermont, and is open to the public. We grow shade trees, crabapples, fruit trees, evergreens and fruiting and flowering shrubs on over 20 acres of growing fields. There is an acre dedicated entirely to growing thousands of hardy perennials. Two restored antique glass greenhouses produce annual flowers, hanging baskets, patio planters, vegetable plants and kitchen herbs each season. We are home to gorgeous and ever-in-bloom display gardens that are free for all to tour for inspiration.
2017 Season Hours:

Horsford’s Dog policy: We want to keep your dog safe. After a few too many incidents of dogs not getting along with other dogs, we no longer allow dogs at Horsford Gardens and Nursery. We apologize for any inconvenience.
As a full service garden center, Horsford’s sells bagged and bulk soils, compost, mulch, stone and sand as well as organic fertilizers and custom-mixed grass seed. The garden shop carries tools, seeds, seasonal bulbs, and unique garden gifts.
All of our staff are passionate gardeners. Many have degrees in plant and soil science, horticulture, environmental studies, botany and landscape architecture so please feel free to pick our brains! If someone cannot answer your question they will track down the person who can. Services offered include garden and hardscape design and installation, site consultation and delivery of all our products.
Nursery Growing Fields
In May and June the lilacs and crabapples are in full bloom, a truly fragrant sight. In the fall our field-grown trees put on quite a leaf-peeping show with brillant fall foliage. We welcome visitors to take a self-guided tour of all our fields. If you see a tree or shrub that you have to have, one of our staff gardeners will be happy to tag it for you. Our field crew will dig it at the appropriate time.
Horsford’s restored two antique Lord & Burnham glass greenhouses in order to expand our growing potential in a grand tradition. We connected these houses using the glass and cypress beams from the original greenhouses dating back to the late 1800’s. Unlike the disposable plastic greenhouses of today, glass allows summer heat and winter cold to break pest cycles. With the help of beneficial insects and integrated pest and disease management, we are proud to grow pesticide-free annuals, herbs and vegetable plants in our greenhouses.
When visiting the nursery be sure to allow plenty of time to enjoy a stroll through our many display gardens, including:
-Dahlia and Zinnia Cutting Garden
-Iris, Daylily and Phlox Circle Garden
-Mixed Evergreen and Deciduous Shrub Border Garden
-Perennial Shade Garden
-Perennial Sun Garden
-Spring Bulb Garden
-Additional growing beds for propagating and testing
